A missing link: The rasa of Srila Prabhupada

10438195_899629100103690_5090233432727324064_nGurudeva used to open festivals by glorifying Srila Prabhupada and speak about their relationship. He spoke so much about Srila Prabhupada that it would be easier to ask: “Which lectures didn’t he speak about Srila Prabhupada”, than list all the ones he did.
Still, in all the documentation I have read from Gurudevas sanga, and in all the books/lectures I’ve read, not once have Gurudeva revealed Srila Prabhupadas name and service.
Srila Gurudeva:
“Srila Bhaktivedanta Svami Maharaja and my Gurudeva are
both serving there in their female forms as gopis. In that realm my Gurudeva is Vinoda Manjari, Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddanta Sarasvati Thakura is Nayana Manjari, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is Kamala Manjari, Srila Jiva Gosvami is Vilasa Manjari, Srila Rupa Gosvami is Rupa Manjari, and Srila Raghunatha dasa Gosvami is Rati Manjari. These manjaris can serve Radha-Krsna Conjugal.”
Dhrstadyumna dasa: And our Srila Prabhupada?
Srila Gurudeva:
If you fully surrender, by body, mind, words and ego, then I
may tell you. Otherwise, I will not. I know who he is, but you do not know. None of the ISKCON leaders know. Your Prabhupada has cheated them all, in the sense that he has not revealed himself to them at all. He is rati-keli-siddhyai ya
yalibhir yuktir apeksaniya

Gurudeva sticks to his argument about Srila Prabhupada being a gopi and he talks generally around the moods, but he never reveal anything about Srila Prabhupada specifically. He has no qualms about revealing these things of the other Gurus in our line; but Srila Prabhupada – Nothing! Nada. Zip zero.

This is very, very, very strange! If somebody can show me this is not the case, I would love to receive Gurudeva’s revelation. But so far, Gurudeva only speaks about Srila Prabhupadas rasa in a circumstantial way, and therefore leave A LOT of room for interpretation.

No information on name and specific service. That is how expert communicators get around issues – they know how to play with definitions and phrasing.

  1. Dandavats perhaps following the requested method given by Srila Gurudeva himself is a better method than conjecture about the motive of Srila Gurudeva he did make it clear ” If you fully surrender by body, mind, words, and ego ”
Then Srila Gurudeva may tell otherwise not. More over in Vaishnava theology logic is important not as important as hearing direct words of self realized souls but if you hear that the following 10 Persons are on a team and numbers and the first nine players mentioned have numbers 1 through 9 what number will the last player wear? but I still go with fully surrender.

    • I think it’s important to understand Srila Gurudeva from a historic perspective as well. Why limit ourselves to when we are surrendered (which may not happen this lifetime)? Have you noticed how much harikatha this controversy has sparked? How much really deep siddhanta is coming forth?

Of course we need to look at and question why Gurudeva speaks as he does. There’s a reason why we need the association of a pure devotee during our whole life – because they can clear up conceptions for us. Unfortunately, there seem to be missing pure devotees that will speak up for Gurudeva’s conception. This is why I have written a couple of blog posts about Bharati Maharaja because he is accepted by Gurudevas sanga.

I don’t want to wait until I’m fully surrendered to understand my Gurudeva. The component for greed doesn’t consider qualification in going for what you want. Why should I or anybody else?

Even if I make a mistake in this regard, I don’t think it’s much of importance. There’s ample room for making mistakes in spiritual life, and I see no reason for this to stop us in our quest for understanding.

  2. Hey!

Thanks for this listing. I read a lot of things in the last hours, until yesterday I didn`t read anything about the whole discussion and now I prefer to withdrew myself again from it and go on with my purificationprocess. The most sane and convincing article on the subject matter is to my most limited estimation the one from Srila Suddhadvaita Maharaja.
Jaya Sri Radhe! Jaya Srila Gurudeva!

    • This debate has been going on since March, so it’s too much to take in during just one day. I have provided a timeline now with links, so it’s possible to take it slow and at your own pace 🙂

  3. so far I read a lot of to me apperently aparadha and I don`t like to dive deeper into that, for this reason I don´t have a FB account.
I found this somewhere and I think it is simply awesome.

Do you know what is Prahujiis opinion on the subject?

    • Who is Prabhuji?

If you see a lot of aparadha, then may be this discussion is not for you, at least not now. It doesn’t really matter what rasa Srila Prabhupada has, he’s still a pure devotee. What I see comes out of this is a lot of high class siddhanta and an opportunity to further understand the different rasas. Despite my blog posts to the contrary, I actually think both parties have handled their differences well. They try to the best of their abilities to be respectful and provide arguments for their opinions, and we can’t expect perfect behavior either.

It took me many years before I came to the place where I understood that many of those I looked up to are just humans, and may not even be as advanced as I thought.

There is ample room for mistakes in spiritual life, even offences. That’s why we have the holy Names and we have to chant everyday. In the case of Vaishnava aparadha, it’s beyond me to say whether this occurs or not. Most likely, even I can have committed aparadhas in my comments. But you know, even as I write this I’m thinking and praying, “If I have committed aparadhas and hurt somebodys feelings, I’m sorry”. It will not stop me from continuing writing my opinions, but I hope that when I’m wrong that somebody will expertly put me in place. I believe Gurudeva and Krishna is forgiving. I have firm faith they will place me on the correct path when I stray.

And for me who is so far removed from it – this controversy is blissfull.

  4. Prabhuji is Sripad Premananda Prabhu.
For me it also doesn`t matter much in my nistha to Srila Gurudeva if Srila Prabhupada
is a sakha. Sure sometimes siddhanta is stirred up, but the price might be high.
I prefer to read books, hear classes or have face to face coversations and discussions and even that is sometimes
with much passion involved, even by very learned persons, as I witnessed last year.
What always wins in the end is the forth sloka of Siksamrta. Only with a peaceful mind who is giving always respect to others it is possible to chant constantly, and that
is the desire of my Gurudeva for me.
I regret already to read the statement on backtobhakti and to comment here on it in the first place.
    Radhe Radhe Prabhu!
